If you read airgun forums you would be forgiven for thinking the diabolo pellet is on its way out. It is not. The two projectile types simply solve different problems.
The diabolo pellet uses a waisted body and a hollow, flared skirt to remain stable in flight. It is light, easy to accelerate, forgiving of barrel twist rate, and astonishingly accurate from roughly 10 to 55 metres. It works in almost any airgun, from a budget springer to a tuned PCP.
The slug is a scaled-down solid bullet with a much higher ballistic coefficient. It resists wind and retains energy far better at extreme range — 100 metres and beyond — but it is demanding: it generally needs a high-power PCP and often a faster barrel twist to stabilise.
Our advice is unglamorous but reliable: for target work, pest control and hunting inside about 55 metres, a quality diabolo is the right tool. Reach past that, with a rifle built for it, and a slug earns its place. Most shooters spend most of their time in pellet territory.
