Weight gets the attention, but head size is the unsung hero of pellet accuracy. The head is the part that engages the rifling, and a difference of just 0.02 mm can change how a pellet seats and spins.
A head that is slightly large for a given barrel grips the rifling firmly and can deliver superb accuracy — at the cost of a little velocity. A slightly smaller head loads easily and flies faster but may not stabilise as tightly. Barrels vary, so the “best” head size is the one your specific barrel prefers.
This is why serious competitors test batches and even sort by head size. For most shooters the practical step is simpler: pick a quality pellet with tight manufacturing tolerances, so the heads are consistent within the tin in the first place.
